FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Answered by AMP Battery Management System Experts

A battery management system or more commonly known as BMS is an electronic circuitry or system that controls and monitors the charging, discharging, and overall performance of a battery pack in electric vehicle applications. It helps in optimizing battery life and providing essential information about the battery’s state of health (SoH), state of charge (SoC) while ensuring the safe operations of a battery pack.

A battery management system plays an important role in maintaining the performance and aging of batteries. A BMS prevents overcharging, over-discharging, and overheating, which can damage the battery or even pose safety risks. It maintains the optimal temperature needed for the safe operations of the battery pack.

Battery experts at AMP have developed a comprehensive range of BMSs for all battery applications. From 24 V to 1000 V, AMP BMSs are available for all low voltage (scooters, golf carts, bikes) and high voltage (cars, trucks, construction) applications.

A typical BMS consists of several components, including voltage and current sensors, temperature sensors, a control circuit, a microcontroller or processor, and a communication interface. These components work together to monitor, protect, and manage the battery’s operation. AMP has a proprietary current sensor, ampSENSE, engineered to precisely measure the current of a high voltage battery pack, up to 1500A and 800V, with less than 0.5% error. Combined with AMP’s next-gen BMS, ampSENSE will deliver a safe, accurate, value-add current sensing solution.

Yes. A well-designed and crafted BMS not only significantly improves the battery life, but also helps prevent factors that can cause its degradation. AMP’s proven BMS algorithms can help prevent overcharging and deep discharging of the battery pack that severely degrade the battery pack’s health. Furthermore, our battery management system monitors and balances individual cell voltages and maximizes battery capacity

Thermal runaways or battery fires are not uncommon in electric vehicles. The safe operation of a battery is extremely crucial for the mass adoption of EVs. A BMS, also known as a battery monitoring system, has numerous safety features embedded in it to help protect against these battery fires. Overvoltage and under voltage protection, overcurrent protection, and temperature management. With more than 500,000+ vehicles on the road already, AMP BMS ensures complete safety during its operation.

Yes, BMSs must be customized to suit different battery chemistries. In addition to different chemistries having different profiles, each cell type has unique properties as well that must be adjusted in the characterization of BMS. Complex analysis of cell performance at different conditions can be monitored and profiled with a customized BMS for a particular application. A tailored BMS ensures optimal performance and safety for the specific battery type it is designed for.

No, BMSs are used in a wide range of applications. A BMS application can be found indispensable from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and large-scale energy storage systems.
